School holidays – tips for watching data usage

Teenagers and older kids love to stay in touch with their friends and during school holidays it can be even more important for them to use social media apps such as Instagram or Facebook to stay connected with their friends.

This means that during school holidays, teenagers and older kids can suddenly be spending more time on their phones and use more data than they usually would during school time.

Here are some tips to share with your teenagers to ensure they avoid bill shock:

  • Make sure they understand their plan and data allowance
  • Don’t ignore SMS notifications from their service provider about data use and limits – their service provider will send an SMS when they reach 50%, 80% and 100% of their plan’s data allowance – so if they hit 80%, it’s time to talk about purchasing extra data or changing plans
  • Make use of Wi-Fi whenever it’s available to download Apps, music and video – to avoid adding to your mobile data usage – you can even turn of “mobile data” for certain Apps or for your device

Finally, if managing data use seems too hard – prepaid is always an option, however, you need to remember to keep their credit topped up so that they aren’t left unable to make a call.
