The ACCC has recently warned consumers to be careful about using smartphones advertised as 'waterproof' or 'water resistant'.

As always, it pays to do your research and read the fine print about what such claims actually mean and how wet you can actually allow your smartphone to get.

For example - the 'water resistance' or 'waterproof' rating is important and will provide guidance on the depth of water a device can safely be immersed in as well as for how long. For example, some devices can resist a few splashes or being exposed to slight rain but can't be used under water.

It's also important to note that not all water is the same. Salt water or chlorinated water can cause damage to 'waterproof' phones. Likewise, hot water can also cause damage.

MobileTips recommends investigating watertight cases if you do want to use your phone in or around water. Again it pays to do your research and use these cases as per the directions to keep your phone safe from damage.
